I sent money to a scammer

Contact the bank immediately, stop further contact and report the fraud.

Contact your bank immediately.

Use the official banking app or the number on your card or statement. Say that you believe you have been scammed and ask whether the payment can be stopped or recalled.

  1. Stop communicating with the scammer.
  2. Do not send an additional fee to release, verify or recover the money.
  3. Keep messages, numbers, email addresses, payment details, receipts and screenshots.
  4. Change any passwords or codes you shared.
  5. Report the incident.

Reporting

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, use Report Fraud or call 0300 123 2040. In Scotland, contact Police Scotland on 101. Call 999 if a crime is in progress or someone is in immediate danger.

Beware of recovery scams

People who have lost money may be contacted again by somebody offering to recover it for an upfront fee. Verify any organisation independently and do not pay under pressure.
