Someone says they are calling from your bank

End the call and contact the bank independently, even when the caller knows personal information or the number looks genuine.

The safest action is to end the call.

Caller identification can be falsified. Knowing your name, bank or recent activity does not prove that a caller is genuine.

Common pressure tactics

  • A claim that your money must be moved to a “safe account”
  • A request for a PIN, full password or one-time security code
  • Instructions not to tell family, bank staff or police
  • Pressure to act while staying on the telephone
  • A courier being sent to collect cards, cash or valuables

Verify the call safely

  1. Hang up.
  2. Wait a moment and use another telephone if you are concerned the line may still be open.
  3. Call the number on your bank card, statement or official app.
  4. Explain what the caller asked you to do.

Never use a number supplied by the caller. If you have already moved money or shared a security code, contact the bank immediately and follow the steps in I sent money to a scammer.
