Do not install software for an unexpected caller.
Remote-access tools are legitimate, but a scammer can use them to watch passwords, alter what you see and make payments.
How the scam develops
The caller may claim there is fraud, a virus, a broadband fault or a refund. They ask you to install an app, read out a code, share the screen or log in to online banking.
Warning signs
- Unexpected technical or banking support
- A request to install AnyDesk, TeamViewer or another remote-control app
- Instructions to hide the call from the bank
- A request to move money, buy vouchers or accept a refund on screen
If access is active
- Disconnect the device from the internet.
- Use another device to contact your bank and change important passwords.
- Remove remote-access software or seek reputable support.
- Check accounts for changes and payments.
