Device and app makers release updates to fix faults and known security weaknesses. Delaying them can leave a route that criminals already understand.
What to update
- The phone, tablet or computer operating system
- Web browsers
- Apps, particularly email, document and payment apps
- Security software where used
- Home routers and connected devices when updates are available
Make updates easier
- Turn on automatic updates.
- Keep enough free storage space.
- Restart the device when requested.
- Check occasionally that updates are still installing.
- Back up important photographs and documents.
A device that no longer receives security updates should be replaced when practical, particularly if it is used for email, banking or sensitive information.
