Recorded audio and artificial-intelligence tools can make impersonation more convincing. A caller may sound familiar while claiming there has been an accident, arrest or urgent financial problem.
Use a separate check
- End the call.
- Call the person on the number you already have.
- Contact another family member if they do not answer.
- Use an agreed family question or verification phrase.
Do not rely on
- The voice sounding correct
- The displayed telephone number
- Personal information mentioned by the caller
- Urgency or instructions to keep the situation secret
The safest habit is the same whether the voice is artificial or a skilled impersonator: pause and verify through a separate channel before sending money or sharing information.
