Before buying

  • Research an unfamiliar shop using sources you trust.
  • Be cautious when a price is much lower than everywhere else.
  • Use the retailer’s official app or type the website address yourself.
  • Check delivery, returns and contact information.
  • Remember that a padlock in the browser only means the connection is encrypted; it does not prove the seller is honest.

When paying

Use a payment method with appropriate consumer protection. Be cautious if a seller insists on bank transfer, cryptocurrency, gift cards or payment outside the marketplace.

Protect shopping, payment and banking accounts with unique passwords and an extra sign-in check.

If something goes wrong

Contact the payment provider or bank promptly. Keep the advert, order details, correspondence and receipts. Report misleading online adverts to the relevant platform and the Advertising Standards Authority.
